My Platform

My priorities for Weddington are:

  • Limit commercial growth to the current Commercial District Overlay.

  • Ensure residential growth remains low-density, one acre per home with an emphasis on environmentally friendly land development.

  • Exercise fiscal responsibility while keeping taxes low.

  • Protect our citizens, with a strong emphasis on public safety. Our deputies, EMS, and fire personnel need to know that we have their backs!

  • Work with local agencies, committees, and experts to address traffic congestion issues.

Who is clayton jones?

I was born in Gastonia and moved to Charlotte when I was nine. I attended Pinewood Elementary, Smith Jr. High, and graduated from South Mecklenburg. My parents knew the value of a higher education and sacrificed to make sure that my brother, my sister, and I were able to earn our college degrees. I received my Bachelor of Science from Appalachian State University, a JD from North Carolina Central, and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from The George Washington University.

I was commissioned as a member of the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps out of NCCU. I completed both sea and land tours and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. After retiring, I was hired by Peter Gilchrist to be one of his Assistant District Attorneys. Most of my time at the DA’s Office was spent prosecuting homicides.

My wife and I bought our home in Weddington in 1998, before I retired from the Navy. At the time, I was assigned to the Navy Surgeon General and commuted home from D.C. every weekend. It was a long drive, but worth it to be here in Weddington.

I am now retired and working on that long list of things that couldn’t be done while serving as an Assistant District Attorney. I’ll continue working through that list, but it will come second to the duties of a member of Weddington’s Town Council.

Weddington is more than just where I live it’s my home. I want to ensure that our town remains a safe, beautiful, and well-managed community for generations to come. I bring decades of public service experience, a deep respect for the law, and a commitment to protecting what makes Weddington special.

I would be honored to serve on the Weddington Town Council and to work hard every day on behalf of our residents.
